Learning About Peru!

We just finished a brief look at Thailand! As I mentioned before, the main books we are covering are recommended by the Five in a Row [FIAR] curriculum and Give Your Child the World by Jamie C Martin.

Our FIAR book was not about Peru, but I really wanted to talk about Peru this year with our kids since we have a lot of Compassion kids from there. Here are the books we read:

  • Moon Rope // Un lazo a la luna by Lois Ehlert
  • El zorro y el cuy by Kevin Hawkes
  • El secreto de la llama: una leyenda peruana by Harcourt School Publishers
  • Maria Had a Little Llama // María tenía una llamita by Angela Dominguez
  • ¿Tu mamá es una llama? by by Deborah Guarino

The first three a Peruvian folk tales and then the other two are about llamas! The kids really enjoyed the folk tales. El secreto de la llama is a Peruvian flood story, which was interesting to read! Juanito noticed that zorros (foxes) are common in Peruvian stories. Juanito and I had some great conversations about how folk tales are made up and so we had to learn some true things about Peru too!

The kids enjoyed coloring this booklet, Todo Sobre Peru, and learning true facts about Peru! Did you know that potatoes are from South America?

The kids also noticed the instruments on the last page of Maria Had a Little Llama // María tenía una llamita and so we looked up traditional Peruvian instruments and music on YouTube!

We also found a traditional dance, which Rosie especially loved.

We also took time to find Peru on our map and pray for our Compassion kids, Juan, Anthony and Abel in Peru. Now is good timing to be praying for Peru, with all the flooding happening.

We also took some photos of their Todo Sobre Peru artwork to send to our Peruvian Compassion friends! Juanito's flag coloring was shown earlier in this post, and Rosie worked hard on coloring traditional jungle animals of Peru:

And then we had a Peruvian feast! Juan has shared a few times in his letters that his favorite food is ceviche, and then in his most recent letter, he sent us his ceviche recipe (which you can read in this post).

Juan didn't include amounts in his recipe, so I also referenced this Peruvian Ceviche recipe, but swapped limes for lemons to stick with Juan's ingredients. We also made Guiso de Pollo y Papa and Arroz con Leche for dessert! The kids were so excited about eating Peruvian food and we invited my parents, siblings and grandma to join also. I know Juan is going to be so proud when he hears about our meal!

Since we were talking about Peru, I had the kids narrate in Spanish. Next country's narration will be in English!

And Rosie narrated Maria Had a Little Llama // María tenía una llamita.
La niña se llama María. Ella tiene a llama. La llama goes outside the ventana de la iglesia. He waits till María comes.

We've had a great time learning about Peru! Next up, India and Pakistan! It doesn't go along with our FIAR book, but I have some fun books we'll read.
